Elk Valley Trail Construction - Project Management

Cordillera provided project management services for the establishment of the Elk Valley Trail, a 150-km section of the Trans Canada Trail that connects the communities of the Elk Valley between Elkford and Elko in southeastern BC. Year one of this two year project involved construction of 26 km of new trail, upgrades to 13 km of existing trail, construction of 20 bridges, construction and installation of 8 trailhead kiosks, and installation of signage along the route. Specific tasks included planning and layout of trail sections, permitting from land managers and private landowners, materials acquisition and management of multiple concurrent trail construction contracts.

Stein Valley Nlaka’pamux Heritage Park - Facility Condition Assessment and Project Planning

Cordillera conducted an assessment of the recreational infrastructure in Stein Valley Nlaka’pamux Heritage Park in advance of a multi-year capital improvement project. The project involved field review of  the facilities (over 100 km of backcountry trails, 14 campgrounds, numerous bridges and cable cars, and the trailhead parking area) and preparation of a comprehensive report outlining the current status of facilities, recommended improvements, as well as costs estimates and methodology for implementing the recommended works.

License to Cut Facilitation - Backcountry Ski Run Development

Client: Boulder Hut Adventures

Cordillera coordinated a successful license to cut application for ski run development in six treatment units within the tenure area of Boulder Hut Adventures, a commercial backcountry ski touring operation in the southern Purcell Mountains.  The project involved preparation of a detailed application package that included proposed objectives and methodology, mapping individual treatment unit polygons, conducting field surveys to identify tree species composition, forest density, as well as the species and density of arboreal lichens which were used to estimate habitat suitability for mountain caribou.   

Situational Analysis and Recommendations for Crown Land Recreation - Koocanusa Area
Date: 2014
Client: Columbia Basin Trust
 

Cordillera worked as a member of the project team, led by Zumundo Community and Environmental Planning, that prepared a report that detailed the current situation and contained recommended actions with respect to land and water based recreational activities that were negatively impacting natural and social values on Crown Land in the vicinity of the Koocanusa Reservoir in southeastern BC. Cordillera's role in this project was conducting background research and preparation of several case studies that examined processes and mechanisms that were implemented by other jurisdictions that had problems with recreational use similar to the Koocanusa Reservoir area. 

Wildlife Habitat Assessment for Proposed Recreational Trails, Fernie BC
Date: 2013
Client: Recreation Sites and Trail BC

Cordillera completed an pre-screen level assessment report of the habitat values for wildlife species at risk along several existing unofficial mountain bike trails that were proposed for official provincial Recreation Trail designation near Fernie, BC. The project required  a combination of office and field work and involved identifying the individual wildlife species that inhabit the areas, determining the potential impact to the identified wildlife species of recreational use of the trails, and outlining recommended mitigation options.
